Sunnymeade by Twilight - Anglesea

Updated: May 8

In January this year I took an opportunity to visit an open garden in Anglesea by Peter Shaw of Ocean Road Landscaping. I had purchased his book ‘soulscape’ last year and am very fond of his designs - many featuring lots of native and endemic plants.

Upon entering the garden I had an idea of what to expect, but was so glad to spend time discovering the many elements and secrets that make this property so special. The two storey house is set back towards the rear of the block, with the large front garden to be enjoyed straight away.  I think this is a great approach, our homes are often so large in comparison to other garden elements and sometimes an unwanted standout. To be able to enjoy such a mass of greenery before heading indoors is a calming effect and enables you to spend more time enjoying the garden, rather than hiding it away. I don’t want to ramble on too much but highlights were seeing seashell grit used amongst pathways, unique sculptural elements, the gnarly Anglesea grey gums (Eucalyptus obliqua) and the stunning fire pit area.

Peter described the success to their design being mass repetition of plants that they know grow well and sprinklings of special plants in particular spots.
